About CycleBed
CycleBed is a free online tool that helps you find a smarter time to go to bed — or, if you're already up late, a smarter time to wake up. Instead of counting hours until your alarm, it counts sleep cycles.
Why sleep cycles matter
An adult sleep cycle lasts roughly 90 minutes and moves through stages of light sleep, deep sleep, and REM. Waking up at the end of a cycle (during light sleep) feels much easier than waking up mid-cycle, when your brain is still flooded with sleep-promoting chemicals.
That "I feel worse than before I slept" feeling on a 7-hour night isn't a coincidence — you probably woke up in the middle of a deep sleep stage. Eight hours wouldn't have been better; 7.5 hours would have. The math is small, the difference is big.
What the calculator does
Pick one of two modes:
- "I want to wake up at..." — enter your alarm time. The calculator works backwards in 90-minute increments and shows you four bedtime options. Each one ends a cycle at your wake-up time, so you don't get pulled out of deep sleep.
- "I'm going to sleep now" — if you're heading to bed right now, see when you should set your alarm to wake up between cycles. We add 15 minutes for the average time it takes to fall asleep.
That's the whole tool. No accounts, no apps to install, no notifications. Bookmark it and check whenever you need it.
The science (and the limits)
The 90-minute figure is an average. Real cycles range from 70 to 120 minutes and vary night-to-night and person-to-person. Early-night cycles contain more deep sleep; later cycles contain more REM. Children, teenagers, athletes, and people recovering from sleep debt often need more total cycles than the average adult.
CycleBed gives you a useful starting point, but it can't tell you everything. If you struggle with chronic insomnia, daytime sleepiness, snoring, or anxiety around sleep, talk to a sleep specialist. A good sleep doctor can do far more than a calculator can.
Why we built this
We built CycleBed because every existing sleep calculator we tried felt clunky, cluttered with ads, or buried under endless explanatory text before letting you actually use the tool. Our goal: open the page, get your answer in one second, learn more only if you want to.
The Site is supported by display advertising. We don't sell user data, we don't require signups, and we don't try to upsell you on a subscription. Just a calculator that works.
